The Round Pavilion

An open-air kitchen pavilion on a rounded twelve-sided plan. Design direction: keep the round plan, lose the circus-tent roof — the gable-ridge-into-hip roof of the first rendering is the target.

Massing Studies

Design Direction

Verdict from review: the first rendering is the target. The current SketchUp drawing (aerial view above) resolves every roof plane to a single center apex — that pure radial cone is what creates the circus-tent read. The fix is a ridge, not a point.

Why the First Rendering Works

Its roof has a real ridge line: the gable carries back over the plan and terminates in a hip that wraps the curve. The eye reads "house with a bay," not "tent." The low-slung eave, deep overhang, and dark standing-seam panels reinforce the horizontal.

Why the Current Drawing Reads as a Tent

Twelve roof planes converging on one apex is textbook pavilion/tent geometry. Combined with the tall pitch, the apex becomes the composition's focal point — vertical, symmetrical, and carnival-adjacent. The two chimneys punching through the cone amplify it.

The Principle

Keep the round plan at the walls; de-radialize the roof. Any scheme that replaces the point apex with a ridge segment (or clips the apex) breaks the tent silhouette while preserving the curved kitchen gallery below.

Roof Geometry Options

Three ways to blend the current round plan with the roof language of the first rendering. All keep the twelve-segment wall geometry untouched — only the roof framing changes. Diagrams are schematic roof plans (flat front edge = gable side).

Build Notes

Framing the Ridge-to-Hip

Option A frames like a conventional gable until the rear third: a short ridge beam picks up hip rafters fanning to each of the rear facet corners. Fewer compound cuts than the full radial scheme, and standing-seam pans stay long and straight on the two main planes.

Curved Kitchen Gallery

Cabinetry and counters follow the interior curve as a continuous work line — grill, wall oven, kamado station, beverage refrigeration, and dishwasher — with a clerestory window band above.

Open / Closed Modes

Full-height sliding glass panels track around the front and sides, letting the pavilion run as an open-air porch in season and a wind-tight room off season.

Masonry Anchors

Stacked-stone chimney (fireplace or pizza oven flue) and a stone-clad center island ground the composition; flagstone paving continues inside and out for one unbroken floor plane.
